Victory Versus Defeat

Victory has several meanings that refer to a successful outcome. In a military battle victory is the thought of bringing a conflict to and end and subduing those in opposition. An athlete thinks of victory as the victor who is a winning contestant. For the average person victory is the success in the face of overwhelming odds in favor of defeat. It is the triumph against the difficulties that men and women struggle against in life.

Most people are unaware that there is a battle raging in the spiritual realm over the lives of men and women. These people are also unaware that God has given them a choice to make for life, but the opposition tries to prevent the choice from being made. Satan is working hard to suppress the good news make it sound like foolishness.

The choice for life is exclusively for human life on earth, which includes eternal life in the kingdom God. Life begins when we acknowledge God as the creator of life itself and that he rules the life we see, touch and live in. However, because all men have sinned we have fallen short of Godís expectation, our sin has separated us from having any fellowship with God. It means that to restore our relationship with God we must do two things, repent of our sin and secondly accept and give Jesus his rightful place as our Lord.

No matter how we look at the world, the majority of people is certain that God rules the universe, but lives as if their life was not part of Godís universe. Being a stubborn and obstinate people they refuse to give God his right to govern their lives. Although Jesus freed those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death (Hebrews 2:15.) They cling to a sinful way of life that ends in eternal torment.

There is a song that is sung in church that goes like this, ďFaith Is The Victory Faith is the victory, we know, That overcomes the world.Ē It is our faith, the confidence in Godís promises that gives us strength to hold fast to our Lord. James tells us that if we will submit to God Satan will flee from us. (James 4:7) Ultimately victory over the kingdom of darkness is not from anything we have done, but the battle belongs to the Lord.

The strength of men does not have the power to prevail in the spiritual realm. In the war of faith we need to use divine weapons to demolish the strongholds of the spiritual forces of evil where ever they are found. For our struggle is not against men but against the rulers of the kingdom of darkness. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:4) The outcome is that believers are surrounded by captives of their own evil desires and those who think the gospel is foolishness.

Peter likens our enemy like a lion who preys on the unsuspecting and those who do not know the craftiness or manner of deceit he uses. He roars while seeking his prey but when he attacks a Christian he has entered the territory of another Lion. He is tampering with the property of the Lion from the tribe of Judah. Christians need to submit to the Lion of Judah because through faith in him and his promises we too will overcome the world and able to see Jesus open the sealed scrolls of God. (Revelation 5:5)

When we became followers of Christ the blood of Christ purified us from all sin. (1 John 1:7) We were washed, justified and sanctified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11) In addition the Lord Jesus came into our lives (John 14:23) and we became Children of God.

We have the additional promise of belonging to God.

We have the overcoming power of Godís promises that give us victory over death, sin and corruption, over the world and over spiritual powers in the spirit realm.  We have the blood of Christ that purifies us from all sin (1 John 1:7) and we have the confidence to fight the fight of faith. (1 Timothy 6:12) We have divine power to crush the strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4) of Satan and the power of God working in us who is able to surpass anything we can think or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20)   In addition we have been given authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy. (Luke 10:19) God has given us the ability to overcome the world and every obstacle that attempts to distract our attention from following Jesus to our home in heaven.  He said.

Unfortunately there are many who believe they are worthy of eternal life without accepting Jesus into their lives. They spent their entire life living as they saw fit (Proverbs 14:12), they understood God to be the ruler of the universe, yet they did not make the attempt to find God or restore their relationship with God. In their arrogance they have been defeated, not realizing that Heaven is reserved for those who personally chose to give their loyalty and allegiance to the Kingdom of God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
